Fresh & Local

Where possible, we source local, fresh, seasonal and organic food, purchase Fair Trade products, and use non-toxic, eco-friendly, cleaning products. We have bio- dynamic certification. No chemicals have been use at Matara for 15 years.

Made at Matara

At Matara we offer civil ceremonies and receptions, catering and accommodation all in house to ensure ecological principles are followed. We recycle food, cardboard, bottles and all recyclable materials.

Grow Your Own

We encourage the use of seasonable and local flowers and produce, from our own guests gardens, as well as plants and herbs. We also use produce from our own gardens in our catering to add the Matara touch.

Sustainable Practice

Matara was built with many ecological principles in mind from utilising local, sustainable, building materials to installing high performance windows and energy saving insulation designed to use only a quarter of the energy of a traditional building. We purchase ‘green electricity’ from Ecotricity.

All of the used (black) water from the centre is regenerated to living water through our state of the art reed bed pond system and wild life habitat.

Natural Harmony

We have additional wild life areas to provide a haven for local; fauna and flora through careful natural intervention that promotes diversity, harmony, and balance.

Planting Trees

Our guests have planted hundreds of trees, through tree dedications, to off-set the carbon we create during the activities at Matara. Matara endeavours to bring as many activities as possible in-house to save travel and ensure ecological sustainable principles are respected. To reduce the environmental impact.

Continuing Improvements

We are committed to ecological literacy and sustainability at Matara and are developing a Green Audit, so that we can do everything within our means to be environmentally responsible, raise awareness and help make a positive impact within our community.
